What is Karate?

Karate teaches the student to use all parts of the human anatomy as a weapon. This includes; fingers, fists, palms, elbows, feet, knees, and even the head.

Karate is one of the most direct and efficient forms of martial and has a long history in Japan, it has been around in for hundreds of years. Mention karate to some and they think of a simple series of basic punching and kicking techniques. However, Karate is a very broad martial art concept that places a strong emphasis on many methods of unarmed combat – including but not limited to, all methods of:

    – Striking
    – Punching
    – Kicking
    – Blocking
    – Clinching
    – Tripping
    – Locking
    – Sweeping and Evasion

Like all martial arts, the premise of the art is avoid conflict wherever possible. However, when called upon in times of defence, Karate allows you to inflict maximum results against an attacker in the shortest possible time.

Karate can be broken down into two main components, the ‘hard’ and the ‘soft’. As with Jiu-jitsu and Aiki-jujitsuSoft does not imply inferior or weaker – rather an emphasis is placed on flow, timing, and blending with an attacker. Hard does not immediately imply rigid – just structurally strong with a focus on posture and correct body mechanics to deliver greater force and impact.

Breathing, posture, and correct movement are intrinsically connected in the practice of Karate and vital for health, well-being, and longevity in martial arts and life.
