Ju-jutsu
Jujutsu translates as the “art of softness”, from the Japanese words Ju “gentle, supple, or yielding” and Jutsu “art or technique”, and is often spelt as Ju-jutsu, Ju-jitsu, Jiu-Jitsu, or Jiu-Jutsu. Jujutsu emphasises using the attacker’s own power against him to our advantage, instead of directly resisting the force of a stronger opponent. The art employs subtle principles of body mechanics, unbalancing, leverage, redirection, misdirection, and timing.
The foundations for Jujutsu were formed in feudal times, where battlefield samurai needed a form of practical self-defence in the event they lost their principle weapon. However, as Samurai were clad in armour, striking proved ineffective and they quickly learnt that the most efficient methods for neutralizing an enemy on the battlefield took the form of pins, joint locks, and throws.
Jujutsu has evolved into one of the most comprehensive and effective methods of self-defence. Jujutsu is suited to any body type, size, gender and age. This art is great for developing practical self defence skills, conditioning, reflexes, balance, coordination, flexibility, correct breathing technique, and stress relief.
