UNDERSTANDING STRIKING ARTS

More Than
Just Punches.

Striking arts are martial arts systems that use punches, kicks, knees, movement and defensive techniques as primary methods of combat.

At PMAA, our approach to striking is strongly influenced by Kempo Karate. This style of Karate brings together practical striking, movement, body mechanics, combinations and defensive principles to create a versatile martial arts system.

Rather than treating individual techniques as isolated movements, striking training teaches you how to connect them through distance, timing, positioning and controlled application.

This creates a foundation that can be understood alongside principles found throughout other striking arts, including karate, boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai.

THE FOUNDATION

Influenced
By Traditional Karate.

Karate provides an important influence on the way we approach striking at PMAA.

Kempo Karate is a broad martial arts tradition with an emphasis on practical movement, striking, combinations, defensive techniques and the relationship between technique and body mechanics.

Training can involve punches, kicks, blocks, evasive movement and combinations, with an emphasis on learning how techniques work together rather than simply memorising individual movements.

This makes Kempo Karate a useful foundation for developing a well-rounded understanding of striking and practical martial arts.

THE WIDER STRIKING ARTS

One Foundation.
Many Expressions.

Martial arts have developed different approaches to striking across cultures and training systems. While each discipline has its own methods, many share the same fundamental principles.

01

Karate

Karate places strong emphasis on efficient movement, precise striking, distance, timing and disciplined technique.

02

Boxing

Boxing provides a deep study of punching mechanics, footwork, defence, angles, timing and combinations.

03

Kickboxing

Kickboxing combines punching and kicking techniques with movement, combinations, conditioning and controlled sparring.

04

Muay Thai

Muay Thai is known for its use of punches, kicks, knees, elbows, clinching and pressure-based fighting.

CORE STRIKING SKILLS

Learn The
Fundamentals.

01

Punching

Develop efficient punching mechanics, combinations, accuracy and the ability to generate power through coordinated movement.

02

Kicking

Learn fundamental kicking mechanics, balance, control and how kicks can be incorporated into combinations and movement.

03

Footwork

Good striking begins with good movement. Footwork helps manage distance, create angles and maintain balance while attacking or defending.

04

Defence

Striking training includes defensive movement, blocks, evasive techniques, positioning and understanding how to reduce exposure to attacks.

05

Timing

Technique becomes more effective when combined with timing. Training develops the ability to recognise openings and respond appropriately.

06

Combinations

Rather than relying on individual techniques, students learn to connect strikes, movement and defence into fluid combinations.

HOW WE TRAIN

Technique
Meets Practice.

Striking skills are developed through repetition, partner work, movement and controlled application.

Training begins with learning the mechanics of a technique. From there, students practise through structured drills designed to develop coordination, accuracy and timing.

As skills improve, techniques can be combined and applied in increasingly dynamic training environments.
